Three Kindergarten Writing Pages

  1. Landscape writing paper: 5 rows of handwriting lines with a name and date line at the top.
  2. Picture and writing page: a large box to draw in, with 2 writing rows underneath for a sentence about the picture.
  3. Portrait writing paper: 7 rows for longer practice or copying words.

How to Teach Letters on Three-Line Paper

  • Tall letters such as b, d, h, k and l start at the top line and sit on the red baseline.
  • Small letters such as a, c, e, m, o and s fit between the dashed middle line and the baseline.
  • Tail letters such as g, j, p, q and y drop below the baseline.
  • Capital letters touch both the top line and the baseline.

Calling the lines the “sky”, “fence” and “ground” helps many children remember where each letter goes.

Ways to Use This Writing Paper

  • Name practice at the start of the school year.
  • Copying sight words and short sentences.
  • Journal writing: draw a picture, then write about it.
  • Letters and thank-you notes to family members.
  • Writing center and homework practice.

Printing Tips

Print at 100% scale on US Letter or A4 paper. Color printing shows the blue and red guide lines best, but the lines are still easy to see in black and white. Free for home and classroom use.
