How to Read a Times Table Chart
Find the first number in the orange column on the left and the second number in the orange row across the top. The answer is in the square where the row and column meet. For example, row 7 and column 8 meet at 56, because 7 x 8 = 56.
Patterns That Make Multiplication Easier
- Order does not matter: 6 x 4 and 4 x 6 are both 24, so the chart is a mirror image across the blue diagonal.
- The 5s always end in 0 or 5.
- The 9s: the digits of each answer up to 9 x 10 add up to 9, as in 9 x 4 = 36 and 3 + 6 = 9.
- The 10s are the number with a zero on the end.
- The 11s repeat the digit up to 11 x 9, as in 11 x 7 = 77.
Ways to Practice
- Fill in the blank chart one row at a time, starting with the easy rows: 1, 2, 5 and 10.
- Time yourself filling a row and try to beat it the next day.
- Cover part of the filled chart with a sticky note and say the hidden answers.
- Keep the chart in a homework folder or tape it inside a notebook.
